The world is experiencing a discontinuity, a structural transformation that touches everything.
In a discontinuity, existing incentives and systems are broken and then re-form. Legacy expertise is obsolete and strategy has to be torn down to the studs and re-built. I help companies, nonprofits, and families position themselves for this age of climate, political, and technological upheaval.
Does this sound like you?
You feel increasingly uneasy about the toxic political rhetoric and bitter divisions in our country.
You fear the climate crisis could damage your home or your community’s water, electricity, schools, or other critical infrastructure.
You wonder how secure your investments and finances would be if our political system experiences widespread upheaval.
You worry about your kids’ future and wish you could offer them a perspective that’s honest about the very real challenges yet still lets them see a beautiful world where they can dream, explore, struggle, achieve, play, and love?
You experience a sense of loss when you think back to the ecologically and politically stable world of your childhood.
If you answered yes to any of these, you’re not alone.
You’re right to be concerned and wise to be thinking about how to adapt. We’re living in a time of profound and rapid change. Between intensifying climate disasters, democratic instability, and a once-in-a-century pandemic, bedrock aspects of life have become erratic and unreliable.
In the years ahead, the pandemic will recede but the stability of our elections and system of government is likely to deteriorate further, and climate impacts will grow increasingly destructive. We all need to adapt, and those who start early will capture huge advantages versus those who don’t.
I’m an adaptation coach and strategist helping families, communities, nonprofits, and foundations adapt to this era of upheaval. Because of the enormity of the transformations underway, we need to adapt in a wide range of areas.
Areas I work with individuals and families on include:
Family/Emotional – So you and your family can thrive and savor the joys of life amid uncertainty.
Helping your kids learn to thrive amid turbulence and uncertainty so they can dream, imagine futures full of possibility, and live rich, fulfilling lives.
Learning to feel, once again, at peace in the world as it is so you can pursue and achieve meaningful goals, and simply savor the preciousness and joy of life.
Mourning what’s been lost, making peace with transformation, and crafting new narratives of renewal and creation.
Property and Physical Safety – So you can sleep soundly at night knowing your family and community are safe.
Crafting plans for ruggedizing your home and other property against climate disaster and disorder.
Developing an emergency plan and equipping your family for anticipated and unexpected disruptions.
Organizing your community to develop a comprehensive resilience plan to achieve collective security, while also nurturing local civitas.
Financial Resilience – So you can be confident your financial future is secure whatever the future may hold.
Evaluating multiple strategies for protecting your financial future in a time of unforeseen dangers and novel risks.
Updating mental models about financial risk for a higher variance age.
Exploring options for hedging your investment posture against severe societal and climate turbulence scenarios without excess complexity.
Areas I work with foundations and nonprofits on include:
Strategy Overhaul – So your work takes account of today’s greatest risks and your impact will be durable - rather than brittle - in the face of upheaval.
Reevaluating programs through the lens of needs and risks in an increasingly unstable time, especially for disinvested Black, Indigenous, and immigrant communities.
Persuading and organizing your board, leadership, and other stakeholders to develop resilience strategies for your organization.
Developing strategies at the nexus of your unique identity and values, and the adaptation needs of your community and stakeholders.
I use a structured and flexible approach with each client.
This is the framework I use in my work with families and organizations:
Understanding – We’ll start at the beginning to understand where you’re coming from, what you’re most concerned about, your deeper motivation, and where you want to create greater resilience against upheaval.
Assessment – From there we’ll develop a comprehensive assessment of your priorities and objectives so you’ll have absolute clarity about the destination you’re heading toward and the benefits of reaching it.
Strategy – Once we know the destination, we’ll explore potential ways to reach it, including envisioning future scenarios you may need to account for. We’ll draw on best practices and cutting edge insights, and lean into your instincts and wisdom to develop a comprehensive approach customized for you.
Plan – With a clear destination and a strategy for reaching it, the last phase is developing a concrete plan to get it done. This will include practices for overcoming obstacles and keeping your resilience strategies current and aligned with your values and goals.
You can schedule a free initial session with me, in which we will discuss your thoughts, concerns, values, and context, and explore whether we will be able to do valuable work together.
Quick note: I enjoy these conversations a lot, so I encourage you to reach out even if you’re not quite sure what you’re looking for.
If you’d like to continue working together after an exploration session, I offer packages of 4, 10, or 20 sessions, or 3, 6, or 12 months.
